So long, farewell

I've decided to commit to my tumblr feed,

Short films match my attention span

I actually watched a bunch more Bill Murray movies but they have all run together in my head so I can no longer place them in my list with any accuracy.

Long time no Bill

Even though I don't have time to watch Bill Murray movies everyday now that school is back, I still love blogging about him and that people send me BM related things all the time now.

Spacejam

No fucking joke, I watched Spacejam.

Yes Bill Murray is in it!

Ghostbusters 2

Not as good as the first one, but you already knew that. I did like the additional screen time for Egor but it seemed to come at the expense of Venkman's... why would they do that? He is by far the most interesting character! I would have liked him to have been a bit more of a jerk like the first one though.

Quick Change, Where the Buffalo Roam

Where the Buffalo Roam
Where the Buffalo Roam is really rather awesome. It was hard for me to watch and not compare his Hunter S. Thompson to Johnny Depp's. I think Bill Murray just has a more natural acting style, opposed to Depp's theatrical, highly stylized method of acting. I think his deadpan delivery lends pretty well to the character, makes him slightly more believable (only borderline ridiculous). I also liked that the movie used fragments of different events over a span of time to explain Thompson's relationship to his attorney and his editors, rather than one epic adventure. I would also say it's more re-watchable. I find Fear and Loathing was really awesome to watch the first time but is grating upon repeat watches.

Quick Change
I am surprised this isn't a more well know film! The first act (the robbery) is just brilliant. Just pure Murray, totally my kind of humour. The rest of the film gave me a giant stomach ache. Randy Quaid's character is an unwatchable disaster. If you like really painful to watch situational humour this one is for you. I did really like it despite being so uncomfortable the whole time at how much goes wrong for the trio.

Thank you Buffy.

Rushmore

Last night I watched Rushmore with Halen! This is another movie I had not watched for about 10 years, so it was much like watching it for the first time. I do recall that when this movie came out was when I fell in love with Jason Schwartzman. I love that his mannerisms haven't changed in 12 years either. Awesome.

This was also the first Wes Anderson movie I ever saw! I can't wait to watch more during my Bill Murray-a-thon. (I will *try* to space them out so I get a varied view of Mr Murray)

I had the urge to ride bikes, buy a new road bike and smoke cigarettes during this movie. Bill Murray's character taking a smoke and a drink up the diving board was probably why. I kind of loved that.

Ghostbusters, Caddyshack and Groundhog Day

Short responses regarding the Bill Murray movies I have watched so far.

Monday December 13th - Ghostbusters
Bill Murray's character in Ghostbusters is just downright amazing. I really don't get what Dana Barret's problem is. I would go on a date with Venkman in a fucking second. The movie is also full of excellent one liners which I have been dropping incessantly all week.
I had not watched Ghostbusters since I was a kid so it was very much like watching it for the first time. I realized I actually have all three of them jumbled up in my brain so I will have to watch the next two during my Bill Murray-a-thon.

Tuesday December 14th - Caddyshack
Bill Murray's character is not funny. However, despite my usual disgust with Rodney Dangerfield I found his character to be a pleasant foil to the judge. His character was the only one who made me chuckle out loud the whole movie. This movie was also about a half an hour too long to keep my interest.

Wednesday December 15th - Groundhog Day
This movie bored me for the first act, I actually got up and made cheddar cheese scones during it. I did find a few moments particularly awesome however. The first time he remembers not to step in the puddle, and watches another man do so is probably the most hilarious and simple moments of the film. I actually laughed heartily for a good moment afterward. I was also especially fond of when he watches jeopardy and knows all the answers... BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT I WOULD DO TOO. This movie also made me think about how fucking dumb groundhogs day is and now I'm curious as to the background behind it, anybody?

In order of preference:
1)Ghostbusters
2)Caddyshack
3)Groundhog Day

My latest endeavor

With derby on a little break and school wrapping up for the semester my evenings are beginning to look a little empty. Which is (partially) why I decided to watch a different Bill Murray movie everyday for as long as I can keep it up.

This started on Monday when I watched Ghostbusters. Yesterday I watched Caddyshack and I am about to watch Groundhog Day. Most of these movies I am seeing for the first time in many years and some for the first time ever! I will be a Bill Murray expert in no time.

I will also keep a running tally of how much I liked them, currently:
1)Ghostbusters
2)Caddyshack

This scale I think largely reflects the awesomeness of the Bill Murray character in each movie. I'll write about them in a bit more detail later. Right now I have to go watch Groundhog Day!

Ramble ramble

I've been thinking a lot about derby and why I not only play but have a tendency to volunteer for everything and accept leadership roles I really don't have time for. What I am getting in exchange for a hobby that is an incredible time, physical and financial commitment and how my motivations have changed in the 3 years I've been skating.

When I started I had seen women on tv doing it and they seemed so strong and cool and I thought if I could be a fraction as cool or strong I would be such a more interesting person. After my first few times on skates I started to think of it more as a break twice a week from my otherwise sedentary lifestyle. A chance to work up a sweat doing something that wasn't standing behind a hot espresso machine slinging lattes or stocking the shelves of a wine store.

Time passes and slowly I am not too shy to go to practice when the one person I know isn't there because I am *gasp* making friends with girls. Slowly derby life replaces most of my social life and good riddance because I needed the change.

Despite the fact that I have made many friends and continue to through derby, it is not what keeps me going. At some point I realized "Holy shit. I'm good at something". Finding a natural aptitude for something has inspired me to put a substantial amount of work expanding and strengthening my skill set. Desire to play and competitiveness spurs me to be involved in multiple aspects of the sport and league. My relationship with the sport is anything but casual and when I finally have to decide to stop playing the decision will not be made lightly.

But I am not going anywhere, anytime soon.

Blarrghh.

Though apparently not everyone is experiencing August the same way as me, this is the slowest August of my entire life. What is normally the month that flies by the fastest has been crawling by at a snails pace. I am going to blame shitty weather, not partying enough at Fringe and job dissatisfaction for this. Oh yeah not to mention the first week of August was my last week of summer school.

I just can't wait for school and derby to start again so I only have to be here half a day and I have a reason to leave the house a few nights a week. Blaarrghh.

Yesterday I went through my closest and got rid of sooo much junk. Then Erin came over and took her pick of my recycled clothing. I put some of the nicer items away for the clothing swap our junior league is hosting on October 2nd. My next task: organize my entire office. I have a plan for rearranging the furniture but since it's going to involve taking everything off of my bookshelves I might as well go through it and get rid of a whole bunch of shit. This means there may be a pile of books and comics on the "free bench" in my lobby the next couple of days. (Take note, Erin!)

Even though there is actually nothing wrong with my job, it pays decently and is very accommodating of my school and sports schedule.. I still can't help but want to leave. This is pretty much how I feel about every job I have after about 8 months or so. I can't really justify leaving to go back to serving tables. However, if I can find something similar but more in line with my interests, I am so out of here.

Bike accessories!

Last night myself, Halen, Buffy and Mike put new handlebar tape on my bike. YES, the four of us. Though Mike did the actually wrapping and the rest of us handed him scissors and plugs or held the bike up it was an excellent group effort, resulting in my bike looking really fucking sharp. The red tape matches the red striping on my frame, so awesome! So far I have spent $13.00 (tape and a new bell) on my free bike, and it is treating me very well!
Of course all of this happened after watching True Blood and eating espresso fudge on vanilla ice cream. DELICIOUS.

I've been extremely productive at work today which mean it was time for me to waste an hour before I go for afternoon coffee. My work has gotten busier and busier and I've still been stuck in the same mode I was before our program opened and I sat here and read celebrity gossip all day. I still have a lot of down time but there is significantly more work for me to do. Not so much where I don't have time to tweet and blog and do homework, muah haha.

Tonight is my first training committee meeting, I'm excited! I've been drawing up a draft plan for an 8 week (1 night a week) program for new skaters to go through before they join the "Raw Zombies" (our fresh meat team). The idea is that we host the program twice a year and close the league to new members otherwise. I figure it will allow us to give them special attention when they are learning to skate and the basics of the game. Then they will be able to join regular practices without having to sit out of any drills. I hope the committee likes my plan!

Bah!

I actually do not miss my class AT ALL. Soo much work. Where did my summer go? I spent every beautiful day in a basement studio making mediocre art. I got a B, which I am not thrilled with but agree with. Even though I worked 1000x harder in the second half of the class the projects were a lot more difficult and my work just wasn't as good. My portfolio review lasted less than a minute. I just wanted out of there. There are a few things I wish I would have asked but......... meh!

Usually I don't buy my textbooks until a week or so into the class to make sure I am not going to drop it. But I've noticed it puts me immediately behind in the readings and then I never end up doing any of it.. and I have never even dropped a class either...So I already bought most of my textbooks and have started reading the first couple chapters of them. I feel like such a keener. My film studies book is really cute.

I made a blog for my new team <3 BERZERKHERS! We're vikings. It's really exciting. I can't wait for our uniforms (which I really hope turn out as well as I think they will) to arrive and then we can do some team photos. I thought it would be a fun idea to do individual photos in front of an van with some sort of awesome scenery airbrushed onto it.

WWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

About a week left of my art class. I'm going to miss it, I think! Even my grumpy teacher who yells at us about how terrible we are at drawing elipses when he doesn't have enough coffee or cigarettes or is on his period. We just finished painting which I am fairly terrible at. We started sculpture today and this is our project:
Using one kind of object, at least 50 times, build a solid cube. Cube must be 6x6" and held together by only one kind of binder. (I'm using syringes, and it looks fucking badass, let me assure you.)
Then for our final project we have to create 5 2-d pieces based on our sculpture. Anyone have any neat ideas about what I could draw, paint, charcoal involving syringes? I would really like to do a silkscreen for one of them. If I can get an image done up maybe I could convince Kenny to show me how to burn a screen and stuff this weekend.. but we will see!

I've been so focused on my art class I pretty much have ignored everything else. I haven't gone for a skate or a run or anything. I'm going to be in rough shape when the season starts up... which is in no time. NO TIME.

We are having a fun outside scrimmage downtown on the 14th. I hope it doesn't rain! I'm also considering volunteering for a pick-up team that is driving to Kelowna for a game the same weekend. HMM! I miss roller derby.

7.11.2010

In-TENSE.

I've already spent 7+ hours on homework for my art class this week. That's about what I spend on homework for an entire class during the fall or winter semester. There is no way I can get through this class by 'winging it'.

BUT I am realllly enjoying it. The projects are really interesting and the instructor is pretty great. I can already see improvement in my drawing, and I am 1000% more wary of composition. We had our first critique which was not bad at all even though the initial idea of having my classmates pick apart my pieces was really scary to me.

Today I volunteered with a few other girls from the league to pedal a bike powered stage a part of SOSFest. We signed ourselves up immediately because we love bike riding completely overlooking the inherent DIRTY FUCKING HIPPIE FACTOR. The music was fairly terrible. We had some delicious Caribbean food after at Irie then biked over to Victoria Park for our league wrap up party. I won the smelly award 2 years running. I feel that it was unjustly awarded this year, however, the trophy has a golden fucking cheese wedge on it so I have placed it in prime display real estate next to Yoda on the toy shelf. Then I found my last years smelly trophy and rockstar trophy to put beside Freddie Mercury on the adjacent shelf. Now I want more trophies!!

I jogged to school today to pick up some supplies from the art studio only to discover that the doors lock at 6 on weekends!!!!! My determination and sneakiness found me an alternate route through a service elevator in HUB. I am resourceful and BASICALLY Mata Hari. Eat it HUB security!!

Remember playing parachute games in kindergarten?? Like when you run around under a giant parachute and hide in it and stuff? We totally had one at the park and it is still fun but seemed a LOT smaller than it did when we were 5.

Summer school!

So in total I wore dresses about 20/30 days of June. This is a huge feat for me considering I wouldn't wear a dress until I hit 20. It was probably at least 15 more dress days than I would normally have in the summer months and about 20 more than in the winter (long johns, pants, thick socks, boots...).

I kind of feel like the fist stage of summer is over. I had my last month of derby (and our travel team ended our season undefeated), my little brother graduated and my older brother and his fiancee visited. I worked, worked, worked in an attempt to get my summer class tuition paid for before I started it (unsuccessfully). There were bike rides, out of town friend visits and a baseball game. It was a good month.

July will be a little harder. My mornings are no longer flexible, I can't roll into my class at 10:30 like I can at the office. I have a very strict strength and endurance goal to meet before the season starts up again at the end of August. I am committing myself to hockey on Tuesdays, running stairs 2-3 times a week, aiming for 100 consecutive good form push-ups, roller skating or biking to work and school EVERYDAY!!

Also, if the first day was any indication this "FUN ART CLASS" is going to be super intense and hardwork.

BRING IT ON, JULY!!

6.24.2010

my ankles are sad

So I guess running around on concrete having to change directions constantly and quickly has made my ankles verrry sore. The bottom of my feet too, but I'll chalk that up to wearing 500 year old shoes with no support. (I still love ball hockey though).

For a non-game weekend I have a fuck-ton of shit to do. BBQ on Friday,  first junior derby game on Saturday (followed by the Empress with Lynch and Jay, I'm gonna get messy drunk!), Sunday we are having a travel team get together and I have to rush home in time for TRUE BLOOD. Somewhere in there T and I have to go to ball hockey stick city (Canadian Tire) and I have to get my taxes done (I KNOW!! It's June!).

Next Monday is our last practice of the season!! Holy moly, FINALLY. Bah ha. I am very ready for the break, I'm not going to do anything derby related for a long time, probably a week or so. I might be broken anyway after we get annihilated by Rat City on July 3rd. EEEEEEP.

I start my drawing class on July 5th. I have a feeling it's going to be disheartening.

6.23.2010

Slacking off...

I've been having a slack week regarding the dress challenge. This is for a few reasons:
1) I now have to start repeating
2) All of my dresses and skirts are in the dirt laundry and
3) I'm too lazy to sift through and smell test those suckers
4) I have been having trouble sleeping resulting in my being super groggy in the mornings and being rushed

I am still going to make an effort to wear dresses for the rest of the month, and probably more often in general so I consider this challenge to be a success, especially in light of how often I wore dresses prior to this (which is pratically never).

Last summer I played ball hockey with a bunch with some friends and friends of friends at Ritchie Hall. I discovered that I actually realllly love playing ball hockey and I believe I have some serious potential. I don't actually possess any skills, per se. But I am fairly aggressive and I think it surprises the heck out of these dudes. I get frazzled when I actually have the ball in my stick and usually end up passing it to someone on the wrong team. I am going to buy my own stick this weekend and make Tyler teach me some stick handling skilllzz. Tyler is really good at ball hockey. However, he is a complete SHOW OFF. He's all "look at me I'm so fast I'm going to run across the court for no reason to confuse you". Jerk.

I am starting a new challenge this week. The HUNDRED PUSH UP CHALLENGE. I'm actually embarrassed of my lack of upper body strength and need to get serious about improving it.
